## What is Email Frequency?

Email frequency refers to how often you send emails to your list or specific segments. It's the cadence of your communication-daily, weekly, monthly-and directly impacts engagement, deliverability, and unsubscribe rates.

**Frequency Spectrum:**

| Frequency | When Used | Risk Level |
| --------- | ----------------------------- | ----------------- |
| Daily | Time-sensitive, high-interest | High fatigue risk |
| 2-3x/week | Regular engagement | Moderate risk |
| Weekly | Standard newsletter | Low risk |
| Bi-weekly | Niche audiences | Very low risk |
| Monthly | Minimal updates | Low engagement |

**The Challenge**: Find the sweet spot between staying top-of-mind and becoming annoying.

## Why Email Frequency Matters

Send too frequently and you annoy subscribers (unsubscribes, spam complaints). Send too infrequently and you're forgotten (low engagement, missed opportunities).

**Frequency Impact:**
* **Deliverability**: Too many emails → spam folder
* **Engagement**: Right frequency = higher opens/clicks
* **Unsubscribes**: High frequency = higher opt-out rate
* **Spam Complaints**: Exceed tolerance = reputation damage
* **Revenue**: Sweet spot maximizes conversions
**2024 Reality**: Email providers monitor sending patterns. Inconsistent or excessive frequency triggers spam filters regardless of content quality.

## Benchmarks

| Sending Type | Recommended Frequency | Maximum Safe Frequency |
| --------------- | ----------------------- | ---------------------- |
| Cold Outreach | 3-5 emails over 2 weeks | 7 emails max |
| Newsletter | Weekly | Weekly (never more) |
| Product Updates | Bi-weekly | Weekly |
| Promotional | 1-2x/month | Weekly max |
| Transactional | As triggered | As needed |

**Volume Limits:**
* **50-200 emails/day** per domain maximum for cold outreach
* **Keep sending low and steady** rather than bursts
* **New domains**: Start at 5-10/day, increase gradually

## Best Practices

1. **Start Conservative**: Less frequent is safer than more frequent
2. **Monitor Engagement**: Decrease frequency if engagement drops
3. **Segment by Preference**: Let subscribers choose frequency
4. **Test Frequency**: A/B test to find optimal cadence
5. **Watch Complaints**: Any increase signals frequency is too high
6. **Be Consistent**: Regular patterns build trust
7. **Provide Preference Center**: Let subscribers control frequency
8. **Respect Boundaries**: When someone says "too much," reduce immediately

## Common Mistakes

* Starting with high frequency (burns out list quickly)
* Not segmenting (everyone gets same frequency)
* Ignoring engagement signals (low opens should trigger reduction)
* Burst sending (all at once vs. spread out)
* No preference center (subscribers can't adjust)
* Increasing frequency when revenue targets aren't met (backfires)
* Not testing optimal frequency for your audience
* Sending the same frequency to all segments

## Key Takeaways

* Email frequency is how often you send to your list
* Find the sweet spot between memorable and annoying
* Cold outreach: 3-5 emails over 2 weeks maximum
* Newsletters: Weekly is standard, never more
* Start conservative and increase based on engagement
* Monitor spam complaints and unsubscribe rates
* Let subscribers control frequency via preference center
* Consistent, steady sending beats irregular bursts
* High frequency kills deliverability through spam complaints
